The Head Teacher is responsible for the daily care and supervision of children, ensuring their physical, emotional, and cognitive needs are met. This includes developing and implementing a curriculum that promotes self-esteem, independence, and healthy habits, while adhering to state and federal regulations. The Head Teacher must also maintain a safe and clean environment, and have a deep understanding and empathy for the diverse backgrounds of the children and families they serve.


The successful candidate will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with state licensing codes, funding requirements, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as NAEYC standards.

What You'll Do

Interacting with children for extended periods is essential, as is being able to lift and/or carry a child up to 50lbs. The Head Teacher must also be able to sit on the floor or use child-sized furniture, and participate in field trips and playground activities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for hiring, training, and supervising staff, as well as coaching and motivating them to achieve their full potential. Confidentiality is essential, and the Head Teacher must be able to take corrective action when necessary, including writing and implementing performance improvement plans.

Maintaining a stimulating and safe classroom environment and playground area is crucial, and the Head Teacher must be able to create and implement weekly, age-appropriate lesson plans that cater to the individual needs of each child.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for conducting data entry, maintaining classroom files, and ensuring children are developing healthy habits in daily routines and in the curriculum. They will also be expected to participate in the NAEYC Accreditation process and develop activity files and resource materials for the curriculum.

Maintaining and updating center records, including sign-in/sign-out logs, staff files, and child health records, is also a critical aspect of the role. The Head Teacher must be able to communicate effectively, prioritize tasks, and work with minimal supervision. They will also be expected to develop and implement lesson plans that incorporate higher order thinking skills and apply decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

Requirements

Must have access to reliable, insured transportation.


Provide a TVCCA Staff Statement of Good Health signed by a physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner completed within twelve (12) months before the date of employment, and every twenty-four (24) months for current staff.

Have the credentials to obtain a Connecticut Head Teacher License from the Department of Public Health.

Be able to work 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year.

Have the computer skills needed to input information into our database system.

Be able to lift and/or carry a child up to 50lbs.

Provide a written report of negative tuberculin test completed within twelve (12) months prior to the date of employment, or for a known prior reactor, no evidence of active tuberculosis on a chest x-ray.

Must have or obtain and maintain CT child care first-aid, and infant and child CPR, and medication administration certification.

Maintain and update children's Education Files, center staff files, staff professional development files, Parent Involvement Binder, and staff medication log book.

Must be able to work as scheduled; daily attendance and punctuality are required.

Provide a TVCCA Staff Statement of Good Health signed by a physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner completed within twelve (12) months before the date of employment, and every twenty-four (24) months for current staff.

Be at least 18 years of age.

Have the credentials to obtain a Connecticut Head Teacher License from the Department of Public Health.

Have access to reliable, insured transportation.

Nice to Have

While not essential, experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to early childhood education would be an asset to the role.

A strong understanding of NAEYC standards and a commitment to quality early education would also be beneficial.

Bilingualism or multilingualism would be an added advantage in communicating with children and families who speak multiple languages.
