The Assistant Teacher plays a vital role in supporting the planning and implementation of age-appropriate curriculum that fosters self-esteem, independence, and social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth in young children. Ensuring the integration of health, safety, and nutritional education into the curriculum, this role requires a deep understanding of the diverse needs of children and families from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. In the absence of the Head Teacher, the Assistant Teacher assumes responsibility for program operations, maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly learning environment while adhering to all program policies and procedures.

What You'll Do

  • Assume responsibilities of the program operations in the Head Teacher's absence, ensuring continuity and excellence in all aspects of the program.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of child development principles, interacting daily with children to promote their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.
  • Engage in activities with children for extended periods, including physical activities that require mobility, lifting, and carrying, to foster their development and well-being.
  • Attend work as scheduled, demonstrating a strong commitment to daily attendance and punctuality, and flexibility in working hours as needed.
  • Travel to other Little Learners Early Education centers as required to provide coverage and support.
  • Respond effectively to crises and emergencies, maintaining a professional demeanor and prioritizing the safety and well-being of children.
  • Exercise confidentiality and discretion in all aspects of work, adhering to the highest standards of professionalism.
  • Prioritize tasks, work with minimal supervision, and contribute positively as a team member.
  • Document career development progress as required by licensing, school readiness, and accreditation standards.
  • Assist in implementing State of CT licensing codes, funding requirements, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the use of the CLASS tool.
  • Conduct formal and informal child observations and developmental assessments, using tools like TS Gold to inform instruction and programming.
  • Communicate effectively with the center team, families, and supervisors regarding children's progress and updates.
  • Ensure children understand and follow safety rules and regulations, maintaining a safe and stimulating learning environment.
  • Encourage healthy habits in children through daily routines and curriculum, modeling sound nutritional practices and health education.
  • Assist in planning, executing, and evaluating center activities under the supervision of the Head Teacher.
  • Adhere to TVCCA policies and procedures, upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
  • Communicate effectively and clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Supervise effectively, ensuring the safety and well-being of children.
  • Make informed decisions, organize tasks, and problem-solve in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Work under pressure, responding to stressful situations with a positive, mature attitude.

  • Assist the Head Teacher in maintaining CLASS scores at or above the Head Start National Averages in collaborative classrooms.
  • Have the necessary computer skills to input information, prepare newsletters, and complete lesson plans, using database systems effectively.
  • Assume classroom responsibilities when the Head Teacher is absent, ensuring continuity and excellence in all aspects of the program.
  • Take on additional tasks as required to maintain program and agency operations, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to excellence.
  • Adhere to agency and program dress code standards, presenting oneself as neat, clean, and well-groomed.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a positive attitude, establishing good working relations with staff and coworkers, and contributing to a positive and productive team environment.
  • Take the initiative, remain motivated, and work as a team member, demonstrating a strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Have a strong commitment to a quality Early Education program, prioritizing the needs and well-being of children.
  • Have the personal qualities to work effectively with children, relate to parents, staff, and the community, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the diverse needs of children and families from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Be available to work 35-37 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, rotating shifts to cover center operational hours.

Requirements

  • Have access to reliable, insured transportation.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain CT child care first-aid, and infant and child CPR, and medication administration certification.
  • Provide a TVCCA Staff Statement of Good Health signed by a physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner completed within twelve (12) months before the date of employment, and every twenty-four (24) months for current staff.
  • Provide a written report of negative tuberculin test completed within twelve (12) months prior to the date of employment, or for a known prior reactor, no evidence of active tuberculosis on a chest x-ray.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry a child up to 50lbs.
  • Have the credentials to obtain a Connecticut Head Teacher License from the Department of Public Health.
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Be able to work 35 hours/week, 52 weeks/year.
  • The TVCCA Little Learners Early Education Program requires staff to be available from 7:00AM - 5:00PM to cover center operational hours on a rotational basis.
  • Continue professional development per funding source requirements.
  • Strong Computer and ability to effectively communicate with children, parents, staff and volunteers
  • Bachelor's Degree in ECE or related field with 12 credits in Early Childhood Education OR Associate's Degree in ECE or related field with 12 credits in Early Childhood Education OR 12 credits in ECE AND have a valid CDA, or submit within six (6) months of hire date for CDA, obtaining within one (1) year of hire date OR Acquire an Associate's Degree in ECE or related field with 12 credits in ECE within one year (exceptions will be considered by program director on a case by case basis)
