Position Overview
The Center Generalist supports a Head Start center's daily operations, assisting the Center Manager with administrative, health, safety, family engagement, and enrollment tasks. This is a hands-on role at the heart of a busy early childhood center — perfect for someone who loves organization, connecting with families, and keeping a team running smoothly.
Job Type: Regular
Schedule: Full-time (30+ hours)
Job Status: Full-year, no lay-off (Early Head Start)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Travel: Limited to required trainings
What You'll Do
- Enter and maintain accurate program data in the database; run and analyze reports as requested
- Complete and file Child Accident/Injury reports promptly
- Conduct regular file checks to ensure compliance and organization
- Track daily attendance; contact families regarding unexplained absences
- Set up Active Supervision schedules and support reflective team meetings
- Coordinate and prepare agendas for staff meetings, Teacher Team Meetings, and Center Parent Meetings
- Maintain calendars for staff leave and scheduled meetings (including IEP/IFSP)
- Prepare and distribute a bi-monthly Staff Newsletter
- Answer phones, greet visitors, and manage incoming/outgoing mail
- Prepare purchase orders and support recruitment/enrollment of children and families
- Maintain the family communication board and support parent correspondence
- Step into the classroom as needed to cover teacher breaks, maintaining ratio and continuity of care
- Follow emergency procedures, safety protocols, and agency Standards of Conduct
- Participate in agency trainings, meetings, and community events
Other duties as assigned to support center safety and compliance
Requirements
Qualifications
Education (Required)
- CDA required with one year business management / and or office experience
Experience
- Prior office experience
- Prior early childhood experience
- Must be qualified to step into the classroom to assist with teacher breaks (per state child care ratio and licensing requirements)
Certifications
- Current, valid driver's license
- Infant/Pediatric CPR certification
- Up-to-date OSHA, Civil Rights, Mandated Reporter, and Abusive Head Trauma certifications (must follow renewal timelines)
- 25 hours of continuing education required annually
