This support staff member position at Brotman Early Learning Center in Tacoma offers $19 – $21/Hr. The role requires no formal early childhood credentials to start.
The Assistant Teacher collaborates with the Lead Teacher to establish a secure, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for young children. They assist in curriculum implementation, maintain a tidy and well-organized classroom, and provide supervision and support throughout the day. This role involves helping children participate in activities, fostering positive social-emotional development, and communicating effectively with staff and families. Opportunities for professional growth are available, including access to free Early Childhood Education (ECE) classes through our partnership with Clover Park Technical College.

What You'll Do
Classroom Support & Childcare
- Support the Lead Teacher in planning and implementing developmentally suitable curriculum
- Supervise children during all classroom activities, meals, and transitions to ensure their safety and well-being
- Contribute to children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development through supportive guidance and activities
- Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment that promotes a sense of security and calm
- Prepare and clean learning centers, activities, and materials to create an engaging and interactive atmosphere
- Assist with classroom routines, including arrival, departure, snack, and restroom breaks, to promote a sense of predictability and structure
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the Lead Teacher and other staff to ensure seamless classroom operations and achieve shared goals
- Follow the Lead Teacher’s guidance and support classroom management strategies to maintain a positive and productive learning environment
- Communicate observations about children’s behavior, learning, or needs to the Lead Teacher to ensure they receive the necessary support and resources
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge
Families & Relationships
- Interact professionally and positively with families, fostering trust and open communication
- Support the Lead Teacher in sharing updates on children’s daily activities and progress with families, promoting transparency and partnership
- Build trusting relationships with children and families, creating a sense of belonging and connection
Health, Safety, & Sanitation
- Adhere to health, safety, and sanitation protocols, including handwashing, diapering, and cleaning procedures
- Monitor children for signs of illness or injury and report concerns to the Lead Teacher, ensuring their prompt attention and care
- Assist with emergency procedures and follow established safety policies to protect children and staff
Requirements
Assistant Teacher Requirements & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
- Enrollment in Washington State MERIT and completed background check through MERIT / DCYF (essential)
- Current CPR & First Aid Certification (infant/child/adult) (required)
- Bloodborne Pathogens Training (current) (required)
- Negative TB test (Tuberculosis screening) (required)
- Up-to-date immunization records (as required by state licensing) (required)
- Current Food Handler’s Card (Washington State Food Worker Card) (required)
- Ability to follow guidance, directions, and classroom procedures (required)
- Physical ability to lift, carry, and actively engage with children (required)
- Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills (essential)
- Some state-required Early Childhood Education (ECE) credits preferred but not required
Nice to Have
Desirable Qualifications & Experiences
- Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field; relevant coursework or training is also beneficial
- 1–3+ years of experience in early learning or a licensed childcare setting, with a focus on supporting children’s growth and development
- Experience in assisting with curriculum planning and classroom activities, with a focus on promoting social-emotional learning and inclusion
- Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices, with a focus on supporting children’s unique needs and abilities
- Training or coursework in social-emotional learning, inclusion, or trauma-informed care; relevant certifications or specialized knowledge are also beneficial
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus, but not required; we welcome candidates from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds
